Mobilise has provided a range of services to IDS to allow them to better support their residents, scope potential development sites, and understand the housing needs of the Jewish community in areas of North London.
The Industrial Dwellings Society (IDS) manages approximately 1,500 properties in Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Southwark, Camden, Haringey, Redbridge, Barnet and Hertsmere. The housing stock includes flats, houses, sheltered housing, accommodation for people with special needs, as well as a number of shared ownership properties.
The Project
Mobilise has been involved in multiple projects with the Industrial Dwelling Society (IDS), including coaching and mentoring the chief executive, place-based research, research into Jewish housing need, and the development of neighbourhood action plans.
Our Approach
As IDS embarked on a significant programme of development, they wanted to understand housing needs in the Jewish community. Working with the Institute for Jewish Policy Research (JPR), Mobilise designed a research project to undertake both quantitative and qualitative research to understand the needs of different demographics within the Jewish community such as older people, young families, people with special needs, the range of religious affiliations, and the needs in different geographies. IDS later updated its allocations and lettings policy in response to identified housing needs within the Jewish communities it serves.
Mobilise was appointed in January 2021 to run a listening project at one of IDS’s housing blocks. The project arose due to tensions that had arisen between residents over the use of shared spaces. Residents were engaged through a series of interventions including confidential telephone conversations about their experiences. Findings were presented in a report, alongside a series of recommendations designed to support IDS to reduce tensions between residents and develop clearer guidance about some of the issues that had arisen.
Mobilise was reappointed in 2022 to help deliver an estate action plan for IDS at an estate in East London that was undergoing maintenance and management changes. IDS required support to identify priorities for what needed doing and to map out deadlines and responsibilities. This project involved researching what worked well on the estate, what was important to residents, what the challenges were, who needed to be involved and how to implement the changes. We used this information to co-produce an estate action plan with IDS staff and residents.
